Background

TrackSAFE NZ is a charitable trust that works to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries from collisions between motorists and pedestrians and trains.  We work constructively with many groups and organisations to raise public awareness and promote safe behaviour around the New Zealand rail network, particularly at railway level crossings. We pride ourselves on engaging collaboratively with stakeholders to pursue actions that will most effectively improve safety. Our safety campaigns and other activities are based on data and evidence and we provide advice to the rail industry on best practice guidelines on education. At all times we strive to apply a safe system approach to our awareness-raising initiatives. TrackSAFE is funded by KiwiRail, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, Transdev Auckland, Transdev Wellington, John Holland and Greater Wellington Regional Council.

Rail Safety Week

TrackSAFE NZ carries out education and awareness activities nationwide, throughout the year, however, Rail Safety Week is our major, high profile safety campaign. The event is developed and funded by KiwiRail and is supported by a wide range of organisations, including local Councils and NZ Police. To see how you could be involved in supporting Rail Safety Week activities in your area, contact Tracksafe@tracksafe.co.nz. Rail Safety Week runs in the second week of August each year. This year the campaign will be launched by the Minister of Transport Hon Michael Wood at Parliament on Monday 9 August.

Education in schools

TrackSAFE NZ works closely with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to promote curriculum-based rail safety education in primary schools. These resources can be found on the Education Portal. https://education.nzta.govt.nz/teacher-resources/primary-curriculum-resources/rail-safety/

We welcome the opportunity to speak to any secondary schools about any rail safety initiatives they would like to be involved in.
