Who is your biggest hero, and what is it about them that you look up to?

When tasked with writing a brief piece on someone I look up to my mind immediately turned to Andrew Hozier-Byrne, most commonly known as Hozier. Hozier is an Irish singer-songwriter most well known for his hit song Take Me To Church but he is so much more. As a child, he was brought up with Blues and Jazz music constantly around him as his father was a Blues musician. Through this, he was introduced to the idea of political and protest music which has influenced him to this day. His most notable protest songs are Jackboot Jump and Take Me To Church. Take Me To Church has a powerful message against the anti-LGBTQ+ laws in Russia and Jackboot Jump celebrates those protesting the oil pipeline at Standing Rock, Hong Kong, and Moscow. I look up to Hozier because he is someone who is not afraid to stand up and fight for what he believes in. I think that one of the hardest things anyone can do is stand up for their beliefs and take any of the ridicule that comes with that. My school’s prefect oath has the line “I promise to serve this school with integrity, with dignity, with humility and courage.” In this context, courage is thought of as not being afraid to stand up for the school and its values but it is something anyone can apply to their life. As leaders, we must be someone who is a role model for those we hope will follow us. I think that leadership, as a concept, is really just doing your best to have the courage to stand up for what you believe in and fight for it.
