Year 12 NLP event recap

We were absolutely stoked to be able to run three National Leadership Programme events for our Year 12 National Leaders during the Sept/Oct school holidays. Read on to see how it all went!

We had planned to do one big ‘all in’ event but ended up splitting into three because of logistics due to Covid-19, so we gathered each area of National Leaders together. All of the South Island leaders met in Christchurch, the Lower North Island leaders met in Wellington, and Upper North Island leaders met in Auckland.

Each event had its own unique focus and elements, but there was also a whole lot of content and activities that all three groups took part in. A big focus for these first events with our Year 12’s is building them up as leaders and giving them skills and individual development so that they can be well equipped leaders, ready to build strong SADD groups. Take note if you are in Year 12 next year, because you too could apply for this awesome opportunity. The leaders also got to learn about all things SADD, meet various community partners, share their thoughts and their point of view with us and work on projects for activities and ideas that will impact SADD nationally.

SADD’s National Leadership Programme regularly develops some pretty top notch young leaders from around Aotearoa, and it was encouraging to see that we have another amazing cohort of Year 12’s ready to make our roads and communities safer and more connected places.

We were really impressed with our new bunch of leaders, here’s what some of them had to say about the events:

The NLP event was filled with fun, happiness and most of all education to help spread awareness for safer driving on New Zealand roads.
— Carlin Lee, Tuakau College
The NLP event was a great time to meet other like-minded people around our age, to collaborate on ideas for our schools and communities. It was amazing to see the work others have put into making the roads safer for everyone to use.
— Issy Kennedy, Darfield High School
My highlight of the last NLP Event was undertaking a blind obstacle course with fellow NLP students. I found it quite easy to trust the leader as I can run on impulse. Through the event, I also was able to recognise my DISC profile (influencing) and found that I aligned with it almost perfectly.
— Anish Kadariya, Papanui High School
The NLP event has been one of the highlights of my year! It was extremely educational and taught me a lot about leadership, SADD and myself. I meet amazing people with awesome passion and I gained skills that will be helpful in anything I do.
— Ashleigh Putt-Fallows, Southland Girls' High School
The highlight of my holidays! I loved working alongside inspiring students and learning more about SADD and our community partners, all while further developing my leadership skills. It was the perfect balance of learning, creativity, hands-on, and fun!
— Bianca Manzano, Villa Maria College
For me the NLP event was such a great opportunity to meet amazing like minded people, learn what it truly means and takes to be a leader in today’s day and age, undergo teamwork training to better our skills as individuals but also as a collective helping each other to achieve our goals and learn from each other. It was an amazing time and I’m so glad and grateful for attending
— Toby McCarthy-Watts, Wellington High School
Was a really great opportunity to meet with likeminded people, to connect with community partners and learn about how we personally can make an impact! I loved learning more about SADD and how to get others involved. I can’t wait to use the skills learnt to help others in my community.
— Jess Darnley, Albany Senior High School
The Term 3 workshop was very informative and fun, helping us to connect with like-minded people and our community partners, with a focus on leadership on the way. Personally, I really enjoyed how supportive everybody was of each other, and the sense of fellowship, and I hope that I take these skills learned far into the future.
— Yi-Tao Sun, St Kevins College

Not only do we do a bunch of serious stuff at these events, we also have a whole lot of fun. Because fun (and lots of yum food) is very important to us! You can all look forward to seeing much more of our Year 12’s faces around, so stay tuned.
