Term 4 Activities? Are they a thing, can it be done?

So it is coming up to Term 4, the last term of the schooling year! Wowee this year has gone so fast.

If you are even semi in the loop with SADD, you will have gotten the message that this year has been all about adaptability and flexibility with running SADD events/activities in school. Coming up to Term 4 you may be wondering what the plan is...

Term 4 at SADD the focus is always on ‘Passing the Torch’ which basically can be summed up as the idea of setting up your SADD group for success for 2021. However there are always questions about if SADD committees should run activities in Term 4? Does that happen anywhere, and is it a good idea? Obviously as it is with all things SADD, it is up to your group, and you will know your setting and capacity best...but here are some suggestions and ideas:

  • Yes you can run activities and we would highly recommend it if you can!

  • Think about what would work realistically for your school, would an activity aimed at juniors be a good idea, or something outside that is fun and gets people thinking about road safety?

  • What is a good summer campaign or relevant road safety risk you could focus on?

  • Has your group struggled to get things done the rest of the year? If so, Term 4 could be a great chance to finish the year well, it has been a strange one but if you can get an activity off the ground this term it could do wonders for next year’s momentum, and how you feel about your progress this year.

  • How can you encourage and empower students that will be involved next year to run something in Term 4?

  • Is there a ‘Fun Day’ or some other school end of year event that you could piggy back on, and run something for SADD at?

  • Did you have plans for SAFER September or Term 3 that got cancelled, and could you do those activities in Term 4?

  • Could you get a Community Partner in to boost your activity?

  • If you are pressed for time, what about filming and sharing an encouraging video from your SADD group to drive safely and make good decisions on the road over summer?

Term 4 can be busy and hectic, but we do encourage you to make the most of the last time at school this year, and prepare for 2021.  Set your SADD group up for next year as best as you can, and if you can run a SADD activity then all the better!

Here is a helpful blog from last year about how to set your SADD group up for next year:

This blog is all about involving Juniors at school which is a great plan for Term 4:

Here is another blog with ideas for running events in your local primary school, which might fit in well this coming term:

We can’t stress enough that the most important thing for Term 4 is to make sure your committee makes an action plan for SADD 2021 and figure out how you can carry some momentum into next year. If you don’t have time for activities this term, make sure you still meet with your group and set some things up to pass the torch well!
