Nau mai, haere mai, Huia and Rhiana!

Tēnā koutou!

This year we have two new members running the māori advisory rōpū. It’s early in their haerenga (journey) but we are already so excited to see what these two will achieve in 2025. Let’s meet the māori advisory rōpū for 2025 and see what they have in-store.

Why did you get involved with the māori advisory rōpū?

To make a change in our local community. Bringing road safety awareness to students but majorly focusing on Polynesian demographics.

What will you be working on this year with MAR?

I wanted a way to be able to fund some license courses which is one of my projects that I want to explore in the near future.

Kia Ora, Ko Rhiana taku ingoa. I'm from Ngāti Porou I am living in Taranaki where my mama is from. I grew up in a small town called Wairoa it was a nice little town…

Age: 17 years old. (Year 13)

Iwi: Rongomaiwahine

Hapū: Ngai Tu

Dream job: Working in mental health or farming

Why did you get involved with the māori advisory rōpū?

I joined MAR to try and get the word out to more young rangatahi to help let them know that there is an organization that has resources to help learn about dangerous driving and how by doing small things we can make the roads safer and be a voice for them.

What will you be working on this year with MAR?

My project involves making resources that rangatahi can find and use/learn with their whanau making the resources easier and more understandable for rangatahi, well at the same time try and get the protectors of our roads involved eg- police, ambulance and firefighters.

Rhiana Jane, Opunake High School

We are incredibly excited to see the passion and dedication that Rhiana and Huia bring to the māori advisory rōpū in 2025. Their mahi will not only strengthen road safety awareness but also create meaningful connections between Kaitiaki o Ara/SADD, rangatahi, whānau, and the wider community.

Ngā mihi nui ki a kōrua, and let’s make 2025 a year of impact and take the māori advisory rōpū to the next level!!
