Wairarapa coming together and taking action!

As we start settling into Term 3, Wairarapa Road Safety Co-ordinator Holly Hullena pulls through yet again for round 2 of The Wairarapa Youth Symposium. This is a day organised to bring local Kaitiaki o Ara students and community partners together to collaborate, discuss and develop initiatives for making Aotearoa roads a safer place.  It was such a success last year and this year did not disappoint. There were 24 students in attendance representing nearly every Wairarapa kura, as well as an abundance of community partners to tautoko such an awesome kaupapa.

Holly was running a tight ship as we had presentations from many community partners to help provide rangatahi the tools they need to progress. We saw presentations from:

  • Tū Ora - What about you? and the development of a giant snakes and ladders game

  • Waka Kotahi - how to navigate their education portal

  • Track Safe - upcoming campaign & rail safety week

  • Kaitiaki o Ara covering the new After Party resource and SAFER September planning

  • A guest panel to open discussion with community partners and students.

Wairarapa have such a collaborative community taking action towards safer roads. A highlight for me was seeing student plans for SAFER September and I’m so excited to see their plans come to fruition!

We all walked away with new knowledge and tools to move forward. Also now qualified game developers, well… boardgame developers 😄

Ngā mihi nui ki ngā kaimahi me ngā rangatahi mo to koutou mahi! Big shout out to everyone who contributed to such a fun and productive day! Can't wait for next year 👐
