Catching up with Bree from Te Awamutu College

Mia had the privilege to speak to Bree this week and here is what she has to share.

Hi Bree, thank you for taking your time to answer some of my questions. Tell us a bit about yourself for those who don’t know you.

Hi, I’m Bree and I’m Te Awamutu College’s SADD Committee Chairperson. I’m from the Waikato Region (Hamilton born and raised) and enjoying my last year of high school. I've been a part of SADD in my school for the last four years and am greatly enjoying being a part of such a supportive and passionate organisation. I love spending time outdoors and roller-skating with my best friend.

That is awesome to hear. You must be excited about your last year of High School. How did you spend your time during lockdown?

I spent my lockdown reconnecting with old friends and spending hours talking to others. I caught up on the mountain of school work and was able to find some time to plan SADD events in our school for the coming year.

It sounds like you had a huge amount of work to get through. How long have you been involved with SADD and what are your plans for the rest of the year?

As I said before I’ve been a part of SADD for four years now, getting involved in year 10. I was super excited to join the committee and haven’t left since. At Te Awamutu College we aim to have at least one SADD activity every term. Sadly due to Covid-19 we weren’t able to accomplish our activity in term one but we have a colouring competition planned for later this term, our schools SADD week next term and we haven’t decided on our term four activity yet.

This is fully understandable, lockdown has changed all our schedules. It would be great to have one activity each term. We are here to support you in all your future endeavors. Tell me about the poster competition you are planning - this is exciting.

For our poster competition we got the idea off the SADD website as we decided that a low stress quiet activity would be best as everyone is getting back into school after the lockdown. One of my committee members designed the design and we’ve managed to get a hold of some awesome prizes from our local Westpac. So far only one company (Westpac) has gotten back to me and was very excited to sponsor us some cool prizes,  but this is very understandable considering that everyone is working to come back after the lockdown. I have received great support from people like Mia at SADD who have helped me look into other possible sponsors with people like the local councils. I approached all of the local businesses that I contacted via email as this was the easiest and least time consuming option.

You have done a great job Bree! Approaching local businesses for funding is not an easy task to do. You can be proud of yourself. What else are you proud of yourself for doing?

I am proud of the fact being in a band despite having no musical knowledge. I’m proud of my academic achievements such as being top Maori student in year 12.

Wow, congratulations to your achievements! If you are not working hard, what do you do on a day off?

On a rare day off I love to roller-skate with my best friend, sleep in, and catch up on some TV shows.

Thank you Bree, it was awesome to chat with you. Enjoy your next day off with roller skating and we look forward to seeing your poster competition.

If you’re keen to share with us what you have planned, drop us a line! We would love to hear from you.
