Small activities, with a big impact!

Do you want to run something in your school that gets your peers thinking or talking about making good decisions on the roads, but you don’t have heaps of time to plan something big? This blog might be for you! Check out some ideas below that can have a real impact, but not take heaps of preparation or time.

Big events and activities are awesome and we always want to celebrate and encourage young people involved to plan something a bit bigger if they have the capacity! But small events and activities can also have a real lasting impact, often they are more subtle, or get people thinking on a personal level.

We never want students getting involved with SADD to think that you can only make an impact if you plan huge events, so this blog has a variety of ideas for ways you can easily build momentum with SADD in your school/community.

As always these are just ideas, feel free to come up with your own ideas or make them your own. Reach out to your local SADD Delivery Lead to help too!

Here’s 8 activity ideas that are pretty quick and easy to pull off, but that will still have an impact:

1. Know the facts - Find a variety of road safety facts on our 6 Principles webpage: https://www.sadd.org.nz/our-6-principles and share a fact each week on your school notices, school social media pages, or online bulletin board. Lot’s of young people do not know some of the statistics and just reading or hearing something quickly each week can get them thinking!

2. Question time - Similar to the above idea, post a road safety related question each week in the notices, school social media, or bulletin board. These questions are something that will hopefully start a conversation. You can order our SADD conversation cards for a whole variety of open ended questions. https://www.sadd.org.nz/get-free-stuff

3. Advisory Notices - Print out a whole bunch of our advisory notices and spend a lunch time putting them on students cars, you could also add a conversation card too. https://www.sadd.org.nz/downloads-and-links

4. Help your peers with their licence - Print out some of these driver licence support resources below, and leave them in a space that senior students can access them; form rooms, common room, careers office etc https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5e9fc84856b73c7d8df61c78/t/621ffada09ffcc49b222409b/1646263024140/Activity+Sheet+-+Building+experience+Restricted+Licence+Resources.pdf

5. Run a road safety kahoot quiz in form time or an assembly - Get permission from the school, then select one of our kahoots to run, or make your own. Bonus is to get some prizes for the winners!

6. Survey time - Run a survey. They are fairly easy to create, and you can send them out via school notice boards online, and share on your school social media. That way you get an idea for what sort of road safety issues your peers think there are, and this can help with future SADD activities. Below is a guide for doing a survey!

7. Share a video - You could make a road safety video to share in an assembly, form time, or on school social media. Or to make it easier, just look through our youtube channel and see if there is a video already there that you can share with your peers! https://www.youtube.com/user/SADDNZ/videos

8. Set up a road safety information board - You can pretty quickly set up an interactive information notice board somewhere around the school that people will easily see it. Include things like helpful and relevant road safety facts and tips, resources from the SADD website, posters etc

Check out our website for more ideas, and reach out to the staff team for help! Remember that SAFER September is coming up, and these activities are all ideal to fit in throughout that month - https://www.sadd.org.nz/safer-september2022

Have fun making an impact, and remember that all your mahi is making a difference!!!
