That’s a wrap on SAFER September 2024

Our 6th annual SADD road safety month, SAFER September, has come to an end! It's time to reflect on the impact of this month-long campaign dedicated to promoting youth road safety. Throughout the month, we set out to empower young people across Aotearoa to lead critical conversations about road safety, stand up to peer pressure, and take responsibility for creating safer roads for themselves and their communities. Here's a look at some of the activity highlights from a few of our amazing student groups from across the country!

Inglewood High School:

September was a bit busy for Inglewood Highschool so they celebrated SAFER September with a SADD week, scattering activities over the last week of August. They had The Volunteer Fire Brigade and New Plymouth Paramedics do a demo, Kahoots, roadsafety chalk art around the school and also got road safety superstar Marion from Roadsafe Taranaki to demonstrate the seatbelt simulator as well as running an obstacle course with her vision impairment goggles. Fantastic mahi from Inglewood!

Mt Albert Grammar School

Mt Albert Grammar School held a “What Would You Miss” activity to encourage students to reflect on the consequences of dangerous driving. The activity served as a powerful reminder of the importance of road safety for young drivers!

Tauraroa Area School

Tauraroa Area School organized a music night to raise funds for SADD. The event brought the community together through amazing performances by students while supporting road safety awareness.

Taipa Area School

Taipa Area School hosted a tyre-changing activity, teaching students the importance of knowing how to change your tyre. The event aimed to promote safer driving by ensuring students can handle basic roadside emergencies.

Cashmere High School

Cashmere High in Christchurch focused on wheelie and pedestrian safety campaign, getting school staff involved in the action.

 Waimate High School

Waimate High School in South Canterbury put up posters and shared road safety messages in the school notices every day! They also remade the SADD "Dear Grownups" video, organised a scavenger hunt, and held a high-viz day, ensuring road safety was top of mind!

St Kevin’s College

St Kevin's College in Oamaru ran a tyre-changing competition and an impairment goggle obstacle course, awarding certificates to participants.

There were loads more activities and messages delivered all over New Zealand throughout September including pedestrian safety activities, obstacle courses, SADD stalls at school market days, Kahoot quizzes, high-vis dress up days and more! A big ka pai and thank you to all of the schools and students who participated in the campaign this year, every action is a step towards a safer future on Kiwi roads.

While September may be over, the message doesn’t stop here. The commitment to road safety is a year-round effort, and the conversations we’ve started this month are just the beginning. Whether it is delivering one more activity in Term 4, focusing on handing over the legacy to new leaders at your school to carry on with in 2025, getting involved in our Summer Campaign, or continuing to post inspiring and influential social media content over the summer, we encourage everyone to take action to protect yourself and your mates on the road.

Together, we can create a culture of responsibility, care, and safety on New Zealand’s roads!
