Youth & Harmony event (RSW)

Youth & Harmony – Tamaki Makaurau.

This year, Road Safety Week and Youth Week fell in the same week (15 – 21 May).

Youth Harmony happened on 20th May and was held in Mt Roskill. It was a free event for young people from all over Tamaki Makaurau to come together for a day filled with fun, food and music.

Ryan Antia, a year 12 student from Mt Albert Grammar, was part of the organising group and is also a member of his school SADD group.  He also attended the Kaitiaki o Ara Auckland Conference in April where he spoke to students to encourage them to be advocates for further involvement in road safety.

Kaitiaki o Ara/SADD Auckland Regional Leader - Lida from Epsom Girls Grammar also attended and brought more SADD students with her (Kemindhi and Lew from Epsom Girls Grammar and Isaac from Auckland Grammar).  Together, they crewed a stall where they chatted with youth about road safety. They were assisted by Kaitiaki o Ara Upper North Island Programme Delivery Lead, Sandra, along with Auckland Transport team members Ramona and Jakob.

Auckland Transport had arranged distraction activities, that the SADD students ran, and also provided some road safety related giveaways. Hosting MP, Michael Wood, spoke to the audience about issues facing youth including road safety.

This event gave the students from all three schools the confidence to run more activities at their own schools and as a result of working together here, will collaborate in the future.

A big thank you to all involved!
